The 7 string guitar is not common but it is also not rare. It is reasonably popular in classical guitar. It has really taken off in specific genres of heavy metal and has taken a good foothold in jazz music. Where it has no taken off is in more general styles of music. Seems to me the extra bass notes would be prefect for any solo performer.
